The International Organization for Migration has reported that the recent floods and torrents that swept through Derna and the eastern regions of the country have resulted in the displacement of over 43,000 individuals. The majority of these displaced persons were residents of Derna.
The organization has expressed concerns that the scarcity of water supplies might compel a significant number of these displaced individuals to abandon Derna. They are likely to seek refuge in other cities located in the eastern and western parts of the country.
In light of these developments, the National Center for Disease Control has issued a warning to the inhabitants of the city. Residents have been advised against using water from groundwater networks, which are believed to have been contaminated by the flood torrents.
Haider Al-Sayeh, the head of the center, has assured that the situation is currently stable. However, he cautioned about potential waterborne diseases and stressed the importance of consuming sterilized water in the affected regions.
