4 bodies of migrants recovered, 291 others rescued off Libyan coast

Libyan Red Crescent Commission in Tripoli said its volunteers had recovered four bodies – two men, one woman and one child – of illegal immigrants off Garabulli shores.

The Libyan Red Crescent said in a statement that it had rescued 40 illegal immigrants as they headed to Europe on a rickety boat in the Mediterranean taking off from Garabulli shores, adding that they had been returned the given the necessary first aid assistance.

In the meantime, the Libyan Coast Guard personnel had rescued 291 illegal immigrants of Arab, African and Asian nationalities as they were taking a dangerous trip to Europe on a dinghy off Al-Zawiya shores, adding that they had been disembarked at Tripili Naval Base.

The Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya, Federico Soda, said he was xtremely concerned about the increased departures from Libya and the continuous loss of life of immigrants.

“The situation cannot be ignored and states must live up to their responsibilities and redeploy search and rescue vessels.” The Chief of IOM Mission in Libya added on Twitter.
