The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdul Hamid Dbeibah discussed with a high-level delegation from the United States enhancing cooperation between Libya and the United States in the fields of combating terrorism, developing military capabilities, and monitoring borders.
The US delegation was headed by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Celeste Wallander, Deputy Commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) ,John W. Brennan, and Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Libya, Jeremy Berndt.
According to the Government of National Unity, the attendees discussed cooperation in the fields of combating terrorism, developing military capabilities, monitoring borders, supporting Libyan military training programs, and developing border monitoring systems, in a way that enhances Libya’s capabilities in confronting security threats.
They also reviewed the danger of closing oil fields and vital resources, as the two sides stressed the need to protect these resources and ensure their continued flow in a way that serves the interests of the Libyan people and enhances economic stability.
According to the GNU, the meeting addressed regional issues related to security and stability in North Africa, as the two parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing security cooperation in a way that achieves joint interests and contributes to supporting stability in the region.
The American delegation also discussed with the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, joint cooperation and the implementation of a number of joint training programs to raise the efficiency of the Libyan army personnel.
According to the General Staff, the Chief of Staff pointed out the depth of relations between the two countries, and their support for the steps toward unifying the military institution to achieve a secure future characterized by economic prosperity and regional stability.
Before the visit to Tripoli, the US delegation discussed with Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi the developments of the Libyan crisis, combating illegal immigration, and preparing the appropriate conditions for holding elections in Libya.
