The Head of Foreign Affairs Committee at the House of Representatives (HoR) Yousef Al-Agouri said he was sorry to hear the statements of the ex-advisor of the UN on Libya, Stephanie Williams in which “she described the Libyan politicians with generalizations”, adding that Williams had wasted great opportunities to support the efforts of politicians in Libya to end the division, but she ignored many sincere efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.
Al-Agouri hailed as well the UN advisor’s previous efforts that achieved some success in the economic file, the ceasefire and her support for dialogue on the constitutional track.
He explained in a statement that what was said by Williams “lacks objectivity and does not appreciate the difficult circumstances in which Libyan politicians operate and the campaigns of hatred against them”, adding that she should have spoken frankly to the Libyan people about the work of the UN Mission (UNSMIL), which made a disastrous mistake by not seriously pursuing the accusations of bribing members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.
“Williams did not talk about the performance of the Government of National Unity, which had a great chance of succeeding in important files such as unifying divided government institutions, economic reform, reconciliation and decentralization. She was not keen on respecting the emerging democracy in Libya, as the position of the UNSMIL was weak in supporting the Bashagha government, which was selected as per a democratic mechanism to achieve national consensus as it represented all Libyan political parties in one government.” He said.
Williams told Middle East Monitor website that most Libyan leaders love to court external actors, to travel the world, and receive the red carpet treatment,” saying that the same leaders, “hypocritically, publicly blame external actors for what are in the end mostly Libyan failures” to reach the needed consensus.
