Al-Areibi tells Alahrar: Some UNSMIL members received bribes

The member of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) Issa Al-Areibi has told Libya Alahrar TV that some of the UN Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) members received bribery, adding that together with certain foreign ambassadors, they didn’t want a Libyan-Libyan consensus.

Al-Areibi added that the 12th constitutional amendment and formation of a new government is a result of the Libyan-Libyan agreement between the roadmap committees of the House of Representatives and High Council of State (HCS).

He said they aren’t waiting for an international recognition of the Libyan Government of Fathi Bashagha as the international community wants to keep its control over Libyan sovereignty with a government formed as per their vision.

“Bashagha was appointed for peace despite being an opponent of Cyrenaica region.” He said, explaining that UN Advisor Stephanie Williams had backed out from forming new committees and said she supported the roadmap committees of the HoR and HCS.

He added that Williams is an advisor to the UN Secretary General and has no right to intervene in Libyan affairs this way, indicating that the alternative to the new government is announcing autonomous state in Cyrenaica (east Libya).

He also said that the HoR gave Bashagha the freedom of forming his government without pressure and that the HoR withdrew some names based on Bashagha’s request. He said the government was acceptable for all parties.

“The past must be forgotten and national reconciliation should take place. The new government has no controversial figures and is the result of a huge consensus. Bashagha and HoR member Sulaiman Al-Fagih are Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) leaders and rejected the HoR in the past but I respect their stances in peace and war.” Al-Areibi added.
