Al-Lafi, Guterres review Libya’s political stalemate

The Libyan Presidential Council (PC) said that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, had informed the Deputy Head, Abdullah Al-Lafi, of his aspiration for the PC to play its role in a comprehensive political process based owned by Libyans and leading to presidential and parliamentary elections.

Guterres and Al-Lafi met on Saturday on the sidelines of the 36th African Union summit in Addis Ababa, where Guterres hailed the efforts of the PC in leading the national reconciliation file, the PC said in a statement.

The meeting came a day after the meeting of the African Union High-level Commission on Libya, during which Guterres stressed the urgent need for political will to break the stalemate in Libya, speaking of an alternative mechanism to reach the constitutional basis and elections, if no agreement on solving the Libyan crisis was found.
