Amnesty International condemns new political detainment in Benghazi

Amnesty International has called on Haftar forces controlling east Libya to reveal the fate of Belgasem Aljared and ensure his release and that he and other abductees are protected from torture.

Aljared, an activist expressing his opinions on social media, was abducted last month in Benghazi by personnel affiliated with what is known as the Internal Security, which has recently intensified arrest campaigns against activists and critics of Khalifa Haftar in the cities of Benghazi and Sirte.

Amnesty International indicated on its Twitter account that Aljared is only detained by Internal Security because of his criticism on social media regarding public matters.

Political arrests continue to haunt activists in certain parts of the country over recent years, an image which brings back memories of the four-decade dictatorship that governed Libya, one that Libyans had hoped was long gone after the end of the Gaddafi regime.
