Borrell: EU ready to assist Libya in security

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has reiterated the EU’s support for the Libyan Government of National Unity to achieve its goals, unify state institutions, prevail security and hold elections in December.

In a joint press conference with the Libyan Foreign Minister, Najla Al-Mangoush, in Tripoli on Wednesday, Borrell said the EU is happy to see Libya achieving progress.

Borrell also reminded Libyans and stakeholders that December elections are approaching, saying that the EU is happy to support Libyan institutions, increase cooperation; especially in the Mediterranean as it plays an important role in monitoring weapons flow and smuggling operations.

Al-Mangoush, on the other hand, said they had agreed that the EU would support stability in Libya, elections and border security whether by training Libyan cadres or by providing technical assistance.

The Libyan foreign Minister also said that they had agreed on the need for a more active role for the EU in Libya as it has a positive impact on Libya.
