Chad open for coordination on foreign fighters, mercenaries’ withdrawal from Libya

The UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, met with the Transitional President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby who expressed his country’s full support for the UN facilitated peace process in Libya, Bathily said on Twitter.

“During the meeting, President Deby stated that peace and stability in Libya is in the best interests of Chad. He expressed satisfaction at being consulted for the first time on the matter and encouraged further involvement.” Bathily added.

He indicated that he had expressed appreciation for the support Chad extends to the 5+5 Joint Military Commission in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement through the Chadian Liaison Committee, which is coordinating the withdrawal of fighters and mercenaries from Libya without adversely impacting the country of origin.

Bathily also met with the met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chadians Abroad and International Cooperation, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, and reviewed UN efforts to enable the holding of inclusive elections in Libya in a secure environment. He expressed Chad’s support to the UN good offices in Libya.

He also met with Minister of Public Security and Immigration, Mahamat Margui. We discussed the need for accelerating the work of the Liaison Committees of Libya, Chad, Sudan and Niger to ensure a coordinated and synchronized withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya.
