Deputy President of Presidential Council hosts ICRC rep. and new Italian Ambassador

In a series of high-level meetings held today, the Deputy President of the Presidential Council, Musa Al-Koni, engaged with key international figures to discuss ongoing humanitarian efforts and bilateral relations.

In his meeting with Mr. Yan Fried, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross mission in Libya, Al-Koni was briefed on the mission’s efforts since the Derna disaster. The mission has been working in close collaboration with the Libyan Red Crescent and a crisis management committee assigned by the Presidential Council. Al-Koni expressed his appreciation for the swift response and extensive experience of the International Red Cross mission and its local partner, the Libyan Red Crescent Association.

Earlier in the day, Al-Koni welcomed Gian Luca Alberini, Ambassador of Italy to Libya. The Ambassador extended his condolences for the Derna disaster and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to support Libya with technical and logistical capabilities to aid in the recovery efforts.

The two officials also discussed several areas of mutual interest, including enhancing cooperation in the oil and gas sectors. The Ambassador expressed Italy’s desire to work towards achieving stability in Libya and appreciated the Presidential Council’s efforts towards national reconciliation and unifying government institutions.

Al-Koni highlighted the distinctive Libyan-Italian relations and emphasized that increased cooperation with Italy would contribute to the economic recovery of both nations. He also stressed the importance of cooperation for developing southern regions to ensure their stability.

The meetings concluded with a review of regional and international developments on issues of common interest between Libya and Italy, including challenges related to illegal immigration and counter-terrorism.
