The Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences confirmed that an earthquake occurred near the Libyan coast on Sunday morning, with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, 250 km north of the city of Derna.
The Center explained that international observatories recorded at exactly 6:01 a.m. Sunday, Libya time, an earthquake on the coast of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, where the surface epicenter of this earthquake was located.
Residents of the city of Derna confirmed that they had felt the earthquake, which was considered minor.
The Center has indicated that the coastal area of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar is characterized by noticeable seismic activity because it is located near the meeting point of tectonic plates that witness continuous seismic activity, where the African and Eurasian plates meet.
