Discussions between Libya and the International Organization for Migration

The Ministry of Interior in the Government of National Unity (GNU) has held discussions with the Director of the Regional Office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the Middle East and North Africa, Othman Belbeisi.

The problems regarding granting exit visas to those targeted for the voluntary return of migrants and coming up with a unified vision regarding this issue was the main discussion point between the two sides. The meeting, which was held on Monday, also discussed providing technical and financial assistance, as well as supporting land and sea ports to mitigate the challenges of irregular migration.

Libya has become in recent years a major route for irregular migration to Europe. Recently, the Italian Ministry of Interior published figures showing that the number of migrants passing through the Libyan coast to Italy, during 2023, was estimated at around 47,000 persons.
