Egypt is leading a coup in Libya, Al-Mishri says

The Head of the Libyan High Council of State (HCS) Khalid Al-Mishri has said Egypt is leading a coup in Libya, adding to Al-Jazeera on Sunday that Khalifa Haftar and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Aqila Saleh are using the help of Egypt and UAE since 2014.

“Haftar has become something from the past, even for his allies as he has burnt all his political cards and he will have no place in future political settlements.” Al-Mishri added.

He added that Russia doesn’t publicly say it is fighting for Haftar as the Russian government and firms recognize the Government of National Accord.

Al-Mishri said the “other party” obliged the GNA to resort to Turkey to confront the “division” led by the UAE, saying Haftar and Saleh have enlisted help from France and Italy as well.

“We’re not asking Turkey to fight for us. We can defend Tripoli, Sirte, Misrata and Al-Zawiya. We just want Turkey to bring balance to the battlefield.” He indicated.

Al-Mishri remarked that the world was silent until the GNA decided to cooperate with a country that can secure legitimacy in Libya, saying that there was no party that offered to assist the legitimate government over the last period so the GNA started to lose trust in the international community.

“Tripoli doesn’t want to form alliances and is looking for coordination with neighboring countries. Our relations with Algeria and Tunisia are mutual and this makes our visions similar for the security of the region.” Al-Mishri added.
