The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said its technical teams managed Wednesday evening to restore electric power to the western part of Derna, adding that they were working on restoring power to the eastern part as well.
According to statements to reporters, the damage done to power plants in western parts of Derna, following the floods that ensued after Storm Daniel hit the city and surrounding areas like Al-Bayda and Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, was less than the damage in the plant in eastern Derna.
GECOL also said that its maintenance and technical teams managed to charge all power plants in Jabal Al-Akhdar after they had been damaged by floods, hailing the tireless work of the teams’ members who raced time to help alleviate the suffering of the people in the disaster region.
After power was restored, reports came about the restoration of phone calls and Internet networks in Derna, allowing people to have better communication with one another and the rest of the country.
Storm Daniel hit eastern coastal cities, especially Derna, Al-Bayda and Al-Marj, on Saturday. Two dams collapsed in Derna valley, washing away entire neighborhoods and killing entire families. The flood torrent obliterated around a quarter or the Mediterranean city of Derna.
