Erdogan: Supporting Haftar is “treason against democracy”

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed Friday that standing with the “putschist Khalifa Haftar” instead of the legitimate Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan people, is a treason against democracy.

Erdogan also rejected the criticism pointed at his country regarding Libya, especially from the countries backing up warlords who have blood on their hands, Anadolu Agency reported.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Ministry blamed France for the Libyan ongoing crisis since 2011, saying in a statement on Wednesday, as a response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements, that Paris has been fully supporting Haftar to achieve its benefits and greedy aims of controlling natural gas sources in Libya.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry added that France and other countries are threatening the very unity of the Libyan territories by giving military support to Haftar against the legitimate Government of National Accord.

The statement called on France to stop its support for Haftar first if it has a real will to abide by the Berlin conference conclusions.
