The French Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it supports the mediation efforts undertaken by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in preparation for resolving the crisis of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), calling on all actors to work with the mission in good faith in order to reach a settlement.
The ministry said in a statement on Friday that it was necessary to “resolve the crisis that threatens the stability of the country’s economy and its security, and jeopardizes Libya’s relations with international financial institutions.”
The statement considered that the continuation of this crisis for a longer period will lead to “serious consequences affecting the Libyan population, especially in terms of the provision of basic goods.”
The French Foreign Ministry added: “This new development embodies the growing and worrying disintegration of the country without a unified government,” noting “French keenness on the unity, transparency and accountability of all Libyan institutions.”
The Ministry has stressed that the possibility of ensuring an end to the current tensions and Libya’s political, economic and security stability in a permanent manner is limited to resuming the political process and forming a unified government capable of organizing presidential and legislative elections in response to the desire of Libyans.
