High Council of State rejects budget approved by House of Representatives

The High Council of State rejected on Monday the 2024 budget approved by the House of Representatives (HoR).

The rejection of the budget came in a session held by the High Council of State in the presence of its president, Mohammed Takala.

The High Council of State said that the budget explicitly violated the Libyan constitution, in addition to violations in form and content.

Member of the High Council of State, Saad bin Sharada, said 63 members rejected the budget out of 75 who attended the session.

He said they considered that the budget’s approval by the House of Representatives had violated the political agreement and the Constitutional Declaration, given that it was passed without consultation with the High Council of State.

The House of Representatives voted last Wednesday to approve the state budget for 2024, after adding 88 billion dinars to the budget approved last April, which had been estimated at more than 90 billion dinars, bringing the total budget for this year to approximately 179 billion dinars.
