The government that was designated by the House of Representatives (HoR) said Libyan children who lost their families to the floods would be under the state guardianship, citing the need to give them all the needed care following the catastrophe that ravaged eastern Libyan cities.
The decision by the HoR-designated government stated that the state would provide healthcare, housing, social care, and psychological support for all the Libyan children who were orphaned by Storm Daniel and ensuing floods that struck east Libya on September 10-11, with the most damage hitting Derna city.
“Social care would include a monthly grant and proper accommodation, in addition to study and medical treatment coverage by the state.” The decision explained.
The government said it would form an expertise committee to register the number of children eligible for the decision, saying the work of the committee should end in a span of one month from the date of issuing the decision (September 22).
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has estimated that 43,059 individuals have been internally displaced by the floods in northeastern Libya.
The full scale of the death toll of Strom Daniel and ensuing floods that have ravaged Derna has yet to emerge and officials have given widely varying death tolls.
