Joint force formed by Libya’s GNU to secure Ras Ajdair border with Tunisia

The Assistant Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army under the command of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Salah Al-Namroush, revealed Wednesday to Libya Alahrar TV channel that the GNU had formed a joint force to be sent to the Ras Ajdair border with Tunisia following days of tensions.

Al-Namroush said the joint force would be solely responsible for securing the Ras Ajdair border and “is tied to no political or tribal links.”

“The joint force is formed to end the ongoing provocations which threaten social security in Libya.” Al-Namroush told Alahrar TV.

Al-Namroush denied the media rumors about mobilization of military units, urging all cities and regions to stay away from tribalism and regionalism as well as to stand in support with the newly-formed joint force.

The Libyan Minister of the Interior, Emad Al-Trabelsi, ordered the closure of the Ras Ajdair border crossing on Monday until further notice after reports of security tension at the border with Tunisia.

Last week, Al-Trabelsi sent the Law Enforcement Authority to the Ras Ajdair border to support the security units there in combating smuggling and ending violations in order to maintain security and manage the movement of travelers between Libya and Tunisia.
