Libya is among the top 10 fuel-consuming countries in Africa

The Business Insider Africa website has recorded Libya among the top ten African countries in fuel consumption.

According to the website, Libya ranked sixth after Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Nigeria, and Morocco, with a consumption of 262 million barrels per day, and 48th in the world rankings.

This comes amid government deliberations regarding lifting government subsidies on fuel, as the head of the Government of National Unity, Abdulhamid Dbeibah, claimed that almost half of the general budget of the Libyan state goes to cover fuel expenses.

Dbeibah describes the current numbers as “frightening,” given that the government buys fuel at a price ranging between 60 and 80 US cents, in exchange for selling it to citizens for three cents. He has called for setting a limit on the price of gasoline to confront smuggling operations.
