Libya: Justice Ministry condemns violations at Garnada prison

The Ministry of Justice of the Government of National Unity condemned, in a statement, the continued practices of torture and enforced disappearance revealed by leaked footage on social media, stressing that these violations constituted a crime against humanity and a violation of international human rights conventions.

The ministry called in a statement for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees and forcibly disappeared prisoners, and for a transparent investigation into these heinous practices to hold those responsible accountable.

The statement also stressed the need to put an end to all forms of torture and inhumane treatment in prisons and detention centers, and to ensure respect for human dignity in accordance with international standards. The statement also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to continuing efforts to protect human rights and combat all forms of violations that target human dignity and the right to live freely and safely.

Leaked videos from inside the notorious Garnada prison have caused widespread shock, as they revealed brutal and inhumane torture practices that prisoners were subjected to, amid accusations that Khalifa Haftar’s forces are responsible for these violations.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International expressed its deep concern about “video clips that allegedly show detainees being subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment at Garnada prison, which is under the control of Haftar’s forces,” according to Diana Eltahawy, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office at the organization.

Eltahawy has explained that Amnesty is conducting further investigations into these allegations, and at the same time, calls on the authorities to open “impartial, independent, comprehensive and prompt” investigations with the aim of holding those responsible for these violations accountable.
