Libya, US agree on avoiding steps leading to violence and instability

US Assistant Secretary of the State Department, Barbra Leaf and Deputy Assistant Secretary Harris met with Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush and discussed full support for the UN process.

The the US State Department’s Near-East Affairs said on Twitter that they also highlighted US opposition to steps by any party that might lead to escalating violence as key Libyan actors and international partners intensify efforts to restore momentum toward early elections.

Meanwhile, Al-Mangoush stressed the rejection of any reasons that plunge Libya into a state of political division, saying that the efforts of the Government of National Unity to impose security and renounce violence in all its forms are ongoing, in addition to continuous work to hold elections that would achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people as soon as possible.

“I appreciate the American role in supporting stability in Libya, and its backing for the international position in favor of elections as the only solution to the Libyan crisis.” She said, urging for selecting an representative for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya that serves the required tasks and has experience in the Libyan file.
