Libyans start voting in municipal councils’ elections

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced the start of the voting process in 58 municipalities targeted for the municipal council elections, saying in a statement that the voting process starts from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday.

The HNEC called on voters to assume their responsibilities and exercise their right to vote and choose their representatives in the municipal councils. It said that voters heading to the ballot boxes was the first step toward building local administration, adding that state institutions must facilitate this step.

29 of these municipalities are located in the west of the country: Misrata, Zintan, Wadi Zamzam, Zella, Harawa, Al-Ameriya, Al-Nasiriyah, Al-Rajban, Al-Rayyanah, Al-Sayeh, Al-Awata, Al-Qaryat, Nismah, Mazdah, Ras Al-Tabbal, Al-Sabi’a, Al-Haraba, Al-Hawamid, Souq Al-Khamis, Kabaw, Al-Mashashiya, Al-Qalaa, Wazen, Al-Rahibat, Qawalish, Qasr Binghashir, Al-Shaqiqa, Al-Shwerif, and Zilten.

17 municipalities are in the south: Wadi Al-Buwanis, Bint Baya, Wadi Atba, Taraghen, Zuwaila, Tajarhi, Al-Uwaynat, Tahala, Al-Barakt, Qaraqara, Al-Raqeeba, Al-Wadi Al-Sharqi, Jarma, Barqan, Ghadames, Sinawenn Awal.

12 municipalities are in the east: Bir Al-Ashhab, Emssaed, Al-Bardi, Marsa Dafna, Al-Maitaniyah, Al-Jawf Al-Gharbi, Tazerbo, Madour Al-Zaytoun, Taknes, Al-Qubba, Al-Abraq, and Al-Qayqab.

On October 27, the HNEC issued the final list of candidates and authorized the launching of the campaign until the electoral silence 24 hours before the election day on November 16. The total number of organizations registered for monitoring was 81, while the number of individual monitors was 973, in addition to seven media outlets and 16 of their representatives.

While the number of voters reached 188.000, the number of employees in the polling stations was estimated at 5.100 distributed over 372 polling stations in about 60 municipalities.
