Libya’s Central Bank reunified after years of east-west division

The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir, and his Deputy Marie Raheel, announced Sunday the reunification of the CBL as a state sovereign institution after over 8 years of division and the creation of a parallel CBL headquarters in Benghazi, eastern Libya.

The reunification announcement came after a meeting Al-Kabir and Marie held in Tripoli in the presence of officials from the two managements: Benghazi and Tripoli.

Local Applause

Following the announcement, the Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, Head of Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, and the Prime Minister of the parallel government, Osama Hammad, all welcomed the reunification of the CBL, calling for taking necessary measures to end the impact of the division and help the CBL operate as a sovereign institution.

International Welcome

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the announcement of the finalization of the reunification of the CBL, saying in a statement that it hailed the CBL for taking the announced measures to complete the reunification process and for committing to address the wider impact of the CBL’s division.

“We hope the CBL’s reunification will help create momentum towards unifying all the country’s political, security and military institutions as the people of Libya have long yearned for.” UNSMIL added.

Meanwhile, The United States (US) also hailed the announcement of the reunification as a step critical to Libya’s economic stability and development.  It added that this show of unity set an important example for reconciliation across all state institutions to build the groundwork toward elections.

“We encourage CBL leadership to follow today’s productive meeting with concrete measures toward full integration of financial and oversight systems, including by activating the CBL board, strengthening the AML/CFT regime, and addressing past counterfeit currency issuance and parallel spending.” The US embassy in Libya said on X platform.
