Libya’s GNA, eastern HoR announce nationwide ceasefire

The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj has ordered an immediate ceasefire and end to all hostilities across Libya in a new initiative to end the ongoing military conflict.

Al-Sarraj said in a statement on Friday that the nationwide ceasefire will pave the way for Sirte and Jufra to be demilitarized zones with the task of securing the two areas being given to police.

“This ceasefire agreement comes in line with the efforts of the Libyan Government of National accord (GNA) to preserve the unity and sovereignty of Libya and the exit of all foreign forces from the country.” He added.

Similarly, the Tobruk-based House of Representatives’ (HoR) Speaker Aqila Saleh also announced Friday a ceasefire in the country to end over a year and a half of bloody clashes in which warlord Haftar’s militias tried to overthrow the legitimate GNA by attacking Tripoli and western Libya in General.

Saleh announced an immediate ceasefire and an end of all hostilities in Libya, urging for the relocation of what he described a newly-elected Presidential Council to Sirte from Tripoli.
