High Council of State member Noah Al-Malti said that 77 members of the council held a session Wednesday to elect members of the presidency office, explaining in statements to Libya Al-Ahrar that the members voted to elect “Naji Mukhtar” as the first deputy of the council and “Omar Khalid” as the second deputy.
Noah said that Naji Mukhtar received 47 votes out of 77 members who attended the session, while the second deputy Omar Khalid Al-Obeidi received 44 votes.
The session was later suspended to Thursday for security reasons. On Thursday, the members will complete the election of a rapporteur.
A statement by Mohammed Takala in the capacity of “Presidency Office of the High Council of State” announced rejection of the session held by a group of members, describing it as a “flagrant violation” of the council’s internal regulations.
Takala described the session as “illegal,” considering it a “serious abuse of powers” stipulated in the internal regulations, and stressing that any decisions or outcomes issued by it will have no legal status and won’t be recognized as part of the official work of the High Council of State.
