The Polish Institute of International Affairs has revealed the continued use of Syrian mercenaries in eastern Libya and the establishment of a training center led by four Russian personnel near Benghazi who were previously responsible for operations in Syria.
The Institute added, in a report entitled “African Legion: A New Version of the Russian Military Presence,” that the number of Russian military personnel in Libya was estimated at 800 at the beginning of 2024, and that they have not shown any clear activity yet.
The institute pointed out the importance of Libya to Russia, especially Al-Jufra Air Base as a growing logistics center, according to the institute.
