The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council (PC), Abdullah Al-Lafi, has stressed the need for international experts to assess the magnitude of destruction in the aftermath of Storm Daniel and ensuing floods in the eastern region, especially in Derna, leaving thousands dead, missing and displaced.
Al-Lafi’s remarks came in a meeting in Tripoli with the Spanish ambassador to Libya, Javier Garcia-Larrache, as they both discussed the great role of the Spanish relief team and its efforts in the rapid response to the disaster in the eastern region’s disaster areas.
Al-Lafi hailed the Spanish support in the calamity that befell Derna and other eastern districts, whether in search and rescue or recovery of bodies’ operations.
Ambassador Garcia-Larrache said his country’s team would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the floods-ravaged cities, especially psychological support for the families who had lost their loved ones. He said this effort would go in line with the work of another Spanish team – soon to arrive in Libya – specialized in epidemic response and tasked with testing drinking water and soil in Derna.
Meanwhile, the Emergency and Rapid Response Team of the Government of National Unity (GNU) said in a press briefing on Saturday that since the declaration of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar region as a disaster area, 70 relief planes and eight vessels had arrived in Libya.
