Remembering the lost cadres of the education sector in Derna on Teachers’ Day

The Human Rights Solidarity Organization has shed light on the aftermath of the devastating storm that swept across the eastern region. The organization stated that the victims, including teachers and others, were not merely casualties of a natural disaster. Instead, they were victims of a “failed” political class that had assumed responsibilities within the state.

The statement, released on World Teachers’ Day, criticized the ruling class for its incompetence and inability to fulfill its responsibilities. The organization argued that those in power do not reflect the choices of society and have reached their positions without the necessary competence.

The flood disaster, according to the organization, has exposed the executive political class’s inability to manage state institutions, both civil and military. However, it also highlighted an impressive display of societal cohesion and solidarity in response to the crisis.

On Teachers’ Day, the organization revealed a concerning statistic: no less than 300 teachers, educators, and educational guides have been lost in the disaster. This includes 45 teachers from Al-Nasr School, 30 from Al-Zuhair Primary School, and 12 faculty members from Derna University. The organization warns that these numbers could exceed initial estimates.

The organization urged activists of charitable associations and civil society institutions to continue supporting the victims of the “Daniel” disaster. It criticized the authorities for their lack of interest in the victims and accused the political class of being preoccupied with what it termed an “absurd” struggle over power while turning a blind eye to those affected by the disaster.
