Report: Washington, London vying for UN mission’s “No.2” job in Libya

Africa Intelligence has reported that the United States (US) is backing its candidate, Kenneth Gluck, for the “number two” job in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), but London is also eyeing the position and wants the post to go to Joanne Adamson.

Adamson, who was United Kingdom’s (UK) ambassador to Bamako from 2014 to 2016, is currently serving United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). She is an Arabic speaker, who has also served as deputy head of the European Union (EU) mission to the United Nations in New York.

The post of UNSMIL’s second in command – the Assistant Secretary-General and Mission Coordinator – is currently held by the Zimbabwean diplomat Raidenson Zenenga. He was appointed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in December 2020.
