Security Council chairperson: It’s difficult to set date for Libya elections

Norway’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mona Juul, who is the current chairperson of the Security Council, told reporters that the Security Council hoped Libya elections would be held on time on December 24, 2021, urging all parties to agree on moving forward democratically toward elections.

Juul indicated that postponing elections wasn’t surprising as all elements for holding them weren’t readily available, adding that it’s difficult to say when elections are to be held.

“Foreign intervention and presence in Libya, including mercenaries and fighters, pose a threat to and a challenge. We need to reach a solution and push for their withdrawal. Security Council will hold a meeting on Libya this January and will discuss extending UNSMIL’s mandate as well.” Juul added.
