The First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Fawzi Al-Nuwairi said that relying on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to resolve the national crisis is merely a waste of time and a continuation of the suffering of Libyans.
Al-Nuwairi added in a statement on Friday that there was no hope that UNSMIL would provide a solution to the Libyan crisis because it “has only contributed to recycling crises and prolonging their duration.”
“Naming a new envoy is nothing but a new link in the chain of failures that the Libyans have faced over the past years. This sterile approach must end, and the solution can only be purely Libyan and stems from the will of the people of the country.” He said, stressing the rejection of relying on UNSMIL as a mediator for the Libyan crisis, and saying that the repeated failure of the UN envoys is conclusive evidence that the solution will not come from abroad but by the will of Libyans alone.
Al-Nuwairi pointed out the need to focus on holding free and fair elections and building a permanent constitution that returns the decision to the Libyan people, so that they can choose their leaders and rebuild their state on legitimate foundations, saying: “True reconciliation is the only way to restore national unity and block any foreign interference.”
He added that Libya’s future can only be built through sincere national efforts that work to restore Libyan sovereignty away from any international agendas or imposed solutions, calling on Libyans to unite and work to build Libya’s future away from the futility of international interventions that have only added to the complexity of the crisis.
