Tripoli hosts the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum

The Tripoli Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum activities were launched with the participation of Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, the President of Chad, Mohamed Déby, the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, the Vice President of the European Union Commission, Margaritis Schinas, and the Prime Minister of Tunisia, Ahmed El Hachani.

In his speech, Dbeibah stated that the forum aims to formulate a unified vision that enhances organized cooperation between countries concerned with migration.

The Prime Minister added, “Libya found itself between the pressure of European rejection of migrants and the waves of migration coming from the African Sahara.”

Dbeibah stressed that resolving the crisis begins by examining the conditions of the source countries. He described immigration to Europe as a “death journey,” saying that the desire to build a decent life is what drives migrants to travel to the Sahara and the Mediterranean desert.

For her part, Meloni said that Libya represents one of the priority countries in the southern Mediterranean regarding training and infrastructure development.

Meloni called for working to participate in mechanisms and synchronize time between countries concerned with migration.

On the other hand, Chadian President Mohamed Deby said that the solution to the migration crisis begins with searching for its causes. Deby added that the repercussions of the wars that Africa experienced are among the main reasons for migration, stating that Africans in transit countries in North Africa are not subject to human rights laws.

For his part, Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abella said that the European Union can provide solutions to the migration crisis by investing in source and transit countries. Abela added that Malta faced several challenges in terms of immigration, stressing their quest for long-term solutions to this phenomenon.

For his part, Vice President of the European Union Commission Margaritis Schinas said that the forum is a major achievement for the Libyan government.

“We must bring all stakeholders to discuss migration,” Schinas added. Schinas said that there are populist voices in Europe and beyond that are trying to isolate the stages of immigration treatment, denying that this is their position.
