UK chargée d’affaires reviews with HoR Speaker UN Adviser’s initiative

The United Kingdom’s chargée d’affaires in Libya, Kate English, said she had a constructive discussion with the Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Aqila Saleh on Saturday, according to a statement b y the UK embassy in Libya.

The statement said that English and Saleh had agreed on the importance of engaging with the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on Libya, Stephanie Williams’ initiative to define a constitutional basis for elections. They also agreed on the importance of stability and the need for compromise and dialogue at this important time in Libya’s transition.

English also discussed with Saleh the UK’s desire to visit the East of Libya later this year to further a range of UK-Libya cooperation.

This came after the governments of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America stressed in a joint statement on Friday that any disagreement on the future of the political process must be resolved without resorting to violence, warning that they stand ready to hold to account those who threaten stability through violence or incitement.
