The Acting Head of UNSMIL, Stephanie Williams, discussed the latest developments in Libya with the Head of the Presidency Council Fayez Al-Sarraj in a telephone conversation Tuesday, going over the declaration of coup on the political agreement by Khalifa Haftar.
Williams briefed Al-Sarraj on her latest outreach with Libyan and International interlocutors, stressing that the Libyan Political Agreement and institutions emanating from it remain the sole internationally recognized framework of governance in Libya as per UN Security Council Resolutions.
She also reaffirmed that political change in Libya must take place through democratic means.
Williams renewed her call for an immediate humanitarian pause during Ramadan, paving the way for a lasting ceasefire based on the outcomes of the UNSMIL-facilitated 5+5 Joint Military Committee talks and a return to the political process as endorsed by Berlin Conference conclusions.
These remarks come after the declaration of warlord Haftar that he had accepted “the mandate of Libyan people” to topple the Libyan Political Agreement signed in Skhirat in December 2015 and to become the ruler of Libya.
