UN Envoy Discusses Impact of Derna Floods with EU Officials

The United Nations envoy to Libya, Abdullah Bathily, held a meeting in Brussels with Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the Deputy President of the European Commission.

The meeting focused on discussing the repercussions of the recent floods that devastated the city of Derna and its neighboring areas, and their subsequent impact on Libya’s situation.

Bathily emphasized the necessity for a joint assessment of reconstruction needs in the areas affected by the storm and subsequent floods. This is to ensure maximum accountability in managing resources allocated for reconstruction.

In a bid to support Libya’s political process and preserve its unity and stability, Bathily urged the European Union and international partners to present a united front. He reiterated the call for comprehensive elections as a means to legitimize political, military, and security institutions and foster their reunification.
