UN envoy slaps HoR, HCS as hindering parties to Libya’s future

The United Nations (UN) envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, has accused the Libyan parties that are calling for new political arrangements and a new transitional government of being after their own share of the “cake”.

Bathily added at the Gathering of Fezzan Elders and Dignitaries on Sunday that Libya’s future shouldn’t have solely depended on the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS), saying that the country should’ve relied on the ambitions and aspirations of the Libyan people in moving forward to the building of a state.

“UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) isn’t in favor of any party in Libya. We believe that building a new Libya is going to happen only through elections that include the HoR and president in a fair and free voting process.” Bathily explained.

He urged all Libyan parties to resolve their differences and reach a settlement for the electoral laws that could lead Libya to transparent elections.

60 HoR members have condemned the statement issued by the UNSMIL regarding the HoR-approved roadmap for the new shape of the executive authority in Libya, saying it aimed at misleading the public opinion and underestimating the vital consensus between the HoR and the High Council of State (HCS) because UNSMIL described the roadmap as a “unilateral initiative.”
