UN Special Advisor on Libya holds series of meetings in Tripoli

The UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Libya, Stephanie Williams, met Tuesday with Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi in Tripoli.

Williams explained on Twitter that she talked with Al-Lafi about the goal of her mission in Libya, which is to lead the three intra-Libyan tracks – political, economic, and military – and support the electoral process.

“We discussed recent political developments and I stressed the need to respect the right of the Libyan people to chose their representatives through the ballot boxes.” Williams said on Twitter.

Williams also met with the second Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Mossa Al-Koni and briefed him about her mandate as Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Libya, especially leading the UN efforts in furthering the implementation of the three dialogue tracks of Berlin Process, saying they had a fruitful discussion on supporting the popular demand for the holding of free, fair and credible elections.

She also said eh met with the Chief of General Staff, Mohammed Al-Haddad, and hailed his meeting with Abdelrazik Al-Nathori in Sirte on December 11, saying she hopes the meeting pushes forward efforts to unify the military institution.

Williams carried out another meeting in Tripoli with the Minister of Interior, Khaled Mazen, about planning and preparations to secure the elections, saying they had discussed the overall security situation in Libya and ways the UN can support Libya’s security Institutions.

In addition, Williams met with Minister of Justice, Halima Ibrahim Abdulrahman, and commended her efforts on national reconciliation, human rights, and prison reforms, stressing the importance to protect the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

While in a meeting with the Head of the High Council of State, Khalid Al-Mishri, Williams discussed the latest developments in Libya, and exchanged views about the way ahead for the electoral process, emphasizing the need to respect the unequivocal demand of the Libyan people for fair, free and credible elections.

Williams also met with the Chairman of the National Oil corporation (NOC) Mustafa Sanalla as part of her mandate to lead the mediation of the political, economic, and security tracks and discussed developments in the oil sector, commending the NOC’s determination to safeguard the independence and unity of this vital institution.

“Libya’s oil is for all Libyans; it is imperative that the NOC remain independent from any political influence or interference.” Williams reiterated.
