US diplomat: Certain countries provide Haftar with weapons to prolong Libya’s conflict

The United States (US) US Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs at the United Nations (UN), Jeffrey DeLaurentis, said some countries are still providing Khalifa Haftar in Libya with weapons and fighters to prolong the crisis in the country.

The US diplomat added in his briefing at a Security Council session tackling Libya on Friday that the continuous presence of mercenaries in Libya could encourage parties to hinder holding elections in December.

DeLaurentis warned of US sanctions on the individuals and entities that are undermining the political process in Libya, urging Security Council member states to support the impelmentatio0n of the ceasefire in full to facilitate the withdrawal of foreign fighters and halt of arms flow to Libya.

“We urge the UN support Mission in Libya to paly a more effective role to ensure the country reaches elections in a free and transparent way on December 24.” He added.
