US special envoy to discuss Libya in Turkey

The US ambassador to Libya on Friday paid a visit to Turkey for talks with top Turkish officials on boosting US support for Libya’s general elections set for December 24.

Richard Norland’s visit to the Turkish capital Ankara will be focusing on the constitutional basis and legislative background, which are two essential elements for Libya’s December 24 presidential and parliamentary elections, according to a statement by the US embassy in Libya.

The statement underlined that the US supports the Libyan people’s right to elect their leaders without external pressure and through a transparent, democratic process, calling on political figures to exercise their influence for the benefit of Libyan citizens during the critical period.

Norland visited Egypt’s Cairo on August 10-11 and held talks with warlord Khalifa Haftar, who on Monday said his militias would not be subordinate to the current Libyan government.
