US warns its citizens against Libya travel over terrorism, coronavirus fears

The United States (US) warned its citizens against traveling to Libya due to what it called crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and armed conflict.

The US State Department said in a statement, that crime levels in Libya are still high, including the threat of kidnapping for ransom, noting that citizens of Western countries and US citizens were targets of these crimes.

“Terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in Libya, and violent extremist activity remains high. There are threats against US government officials and citizens, and tourist sites, hotels, transportation centers, shopping centers as well as government facilities may be attacked without warning.” The statement reads.

The US State Department warned its citizens against being subjected to arbitrary detention without notification or announcement, saying that flights from operating airports are intermittent and can be canceled without warning.

It has also confirmed that the US is unable to provide emergency or routine assistance to American citizens in Libya, as the US embassy in Tripoli suspended operations in July 2014.

The US State Department warned that the level of the epidemiological situation in Libya is unknown, which poses a threat to travelers to Libya of being exposed to coronavirus.
