US welcomes reopening of Sharara oilfield, calls for ending five-month long blockade

The US Embassy in Libya has welcomed the announcement by the National Oil Corporation (NOC) that it is resuming production at the critical Sharara oilfield.

The US Embassy added on Sunday that the resumption of the oil production at Sharara oilfield a significant step forward as the NOC fulfills its crucial and apolitical mandate to promote the interests of all Libyans.

“The needless, five-month long shutdown of Libya’s energy sector and the targeting of NOC personnel and facilities must end on a nationwide basis.” The US Embassy remarked.

It said that now is the time for all responsible parties to reject attempts to militarize the energy sector, divide Libya’s economic institutions, and subjugate critical infrastructure to foreign interests.

Haftar’s loyalists shut down oil ports and fields and blockaded production in January as an attempt to use it as a pressure card in the then political negotiations in Berlin.
