Williams: No withdrawal of military forces has happened yet in and around Sirte

The UN acting envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams has expressed optimism about the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and 5+5 military commission talks, saying the Security Council stands ready with the right tools to hinder foreign intervention from spoiling the ongoing peace process.

The acting envoy of the UN to Libya added Thursday in her briefing at the Security Council virtually that the agreed-on withdrawal of military forces and foreign mercenaries and elements hasn’t yet started, saying that Khalifa Haftar’s militias are still deploying their defense weapons and anti-aircraft systems in the area.

Williams has also condemned the murder of lawyer Hanan Al-Burasi in Benghazi, saying it was a monstrous, senseless crime that shows the threat to women speaking up in Libya.

The UN acting envoy to Libya voiced welcome to the announcement of the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj that he would allocate budget for the upcoming elections in Libya, which the Libyan political dialogue set to be held on December 24, 2021.
