Italy detains a German rescue ship for ignoring instructions from the Libyan Coast Guard

The Italian Ansa Med has stated that Italian authorities have detained the German migrant rescue ship “Sea Eye 4” for 20 days and imposed a 3,000-euro fine on it for ignoring the instructions of the Libyan Coast Guard.

The agency indicated that this is the third time that sanctions have been imposed on the ship since Italy introduced new rules regarding the navigation of private ships in search and rescue operations of migrants in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year.

Ansa Med added that the German crew accused the Libyan Coast Guard of chasing a boat carrying about 50 irregular migrants in the Mediterranean, which led to a number of them falling into the sea.
