Al-Kabir rejects handover of CBL’s job to Presidential Council’s committee

A committee tasked by the Presidential Council to oversee the handover of the duties of the Central Bank of Libya’s (CBL) governor Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir announced the completion of the administrative handover procedures, saying that the “former governor” refused to hand over power.

The committee added that the new board of directors headed by Mohammed Al-Shukri will begin its duties on Wednesday, explaining that the control agencies documented the governor’s refusal to hand over his duties to the new governor.

A source from the Central Bank told Libya Al-Ahrar that Al-Kabir received the committee headed by the Minister of Transportation in the Government of National Unity at the Central Bank’s headquarters, adding that the committee handed Al-Kabir the Presidential Council’s decision to form a new board of directors for the Central Bank, but that Al-Kabir responded by handing them the House of Representatives’ response rejecting the Presidential Council’s decision and keeping him in his office as governor.

The source indicated that the Central Bank promised to send the Presidential Council’s decision officially to the House of Representatives, explaining that the meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere, and adhered to the normal protocol standards in terms of reception, farewell and discussion.

The Presidential Council issued a decision to form a new board of directors headed by Mohammed Al-Shukri, basing its decision to dismiss Al-Kabir on the parliament’s assignment of Al-Shukri as governor of the Central Bank in 2018.

Two days before this decision, the House of Representatives’ presidency issued a decision to suspend the decision to appoint Al-Shukri as governor of the Central Bank, due to the expiry of his term of assignment without starting his work as governor.
