Ambassador to UN rejects “unilateral measures” recently taken in Libya

Libya’s UN ambassador Taher El Sonni stressed in his speech at the Security Council on Tuesday that unilateral actions by any party would constitute a threat, saying that the recent parliament decision to cancel the Geneva agreement was an example of such unilateral measures.

El Sonni pointed out that he had warned of the political vacuum and impasse as well as the absence of a solution, adding that an armed conflict was looming on the horizon. He also said that the crisis in Libya was not legal but rather political.

He stressed that the only solution was to support the desire of Libyans for elections, blaming the Security Council, which he considered to be repeating “condemnations” against Libya without realistic solutions.

El Sonni said that the Security Council was unable to hold the obstructionists accountable and stop foreign interference in Libya.
