Building collapse in Janzour leaves 7 deaths

The collapse of a newly-built three-story residential building in Janzour, west of the capital Tripoli, led to the death of seven people and injury of ten others, according to the Emergency Medicine and Support Center, which indicated that two people were rescued alive from under the rubble.

The Center explained in a statement that all the victims were expatriate workers, noting that the statistics were preliminary, and that it would publish the final details after communicating with the relevant authorities.

Rescue and relief teams, in cooperation with volunteer citizens, continued the rescue and removal of bodies until dawn on Friday.

The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, announced during a speech from the site of the incident, assigning the Ministry of Interior to investigate the incident of the building collapse, stressing the need to take legal measures.

Dbeibah said that the building was newly constructed and and that its collapse was considered a crime due to violating building conditions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice announced in a statement that forensic medicine and engineering expertise teams from the Judicial Expertise and Research Center had headed to the scene immediately after receiving news of the collapse.

According to the statement, Abu Salim Forensic Medicine Department received injured cases, while the Judicial Police secured the scene of the accident. It indicated that – in coordination with the Public Prosecution – investigation procedures had been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.
