The Group of Seven (G7) has called on Libyan parties to overcome the ongoing political stalemate by engaging in a dialogue with good faith and without preconditions.
In its final statement following the summit in Italy, the G7 said that the comprehensive political process led by Libyans and facilitated by the United Nations remained the only useful and pivotal path toward free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Group reaffirmed its commitment to Libya’s stability, independence, territorial integrity and national unity, including confronting external interference.
It called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to appoint a new special representative to succeed Abdoulaye Bathily without delay.
G7’s 50th summit started in Italy on Thursday. The Group includes the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and Japan. This was the 7th time that Italy had hosted the summit of the G7 since the first time in Venice in 1980.
