The Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, General Claudio Graziano, expressed concern over the Russian intervention in Libya, saying Moscow intervened in Libya to weaken international alliances.
Graziano told Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, that there is a need for reactivating alliances due to Russia’s moves outside the international framework, saying the United States had given a significant signal in its desire to cooperate with the European Union in Libya.
He indicated that the European Union operations in Libya are still ongoing through Operation IRINI that is monitoring the arms embargo implementation, saying once Libya regained its stability, they would handle the immigrants’ file.
Graziano said NATO is still an important factor in Libya, but it has left a gap in there since 2011 as it is hardly involved in peace and security operations in the country.
