The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said floods had carried explosive remnants of war (ERW) from Derna to surrounding areas that were submerged by floodwater.
In a statement on Thursday, the ICRC warned of the damage that could be inflicted on civilians by the spread of the explosive remnants of war, urging people to be on alert to avoid the loss of lives.
Storm Daniel hit eastern coastal cities, especially Derna, Al-Bayda and Al-Marj, on Saturday. Two dams collapsed in Derna valley, washing away entire neighborhoods and killing entire families. The flood torrent obliterated around a quarter or the Mediterranean city of Derna.
The mayor of Derna, Abdelmonem Al-Ghaithi, has told Libya Alahrar TV that the number of deaths could reach as high as 18,000 to 20,000 based on the destroyed buildings and houses in the ravaged city.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday that 30,000 people were displaced from Derna; with 3,000 in Albayda, 1,000 in Al-Makheley, and 2,085 individuals still displaced in Benghazi.
